Christian Eriksen: the marquee signing that Man Utd need?
The breeze is starting to quicken on the transfer window, which means that the time is nearing for Sir Alex Ferguson to pop the Man Utd chequebook into a microwave set to “defrost”. With a skeleton midfield falling short of his usual standards, Ferrguson will surely spend the new year throwing money about. But on whom? The Life’s A Pitch panel takes time away from Christmas shopping to discuss the options…
“Christian Eriksen of Ajax would be an interesting option,” says Tom Hopkinson of The People, getting the ball rolling. “Alex Ferguson has had a lot of problems with his midfield this season – he even resorted to using Wayne Rooney back there. United fans don’t want to see that.”
Of course, Ferguson has previous with great Danes, such as Peter Schmeichel, making the allure of Eriksen a very beguiling prospect. But his is not the only name scrawled in lipstick on the Man Utd boss’ Christmas party napkin. Another is Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica.
“He’s a 23-year-old attacking midfielder who plays on either flank,” explains Dominic Fifield of the Guardian. “He’s highly regarded, and he fits the criteria.”
“They’re still short of another marquee signing,” continues Ian Ridley of the Daily Express, “and they need one. Firstly, in terms of numbers, and, secondly, for the fans.”
Time will tell. The panel goes on to discuss Jack Rodwell’s supposedly impending move from Everton to Chelsea, and whispers that Wayne Bridge could yet relocate from the sofa back to the football pitch – this time with Arsenal.
