Cisse and Zamora are “excellent signings” for QPR

The bad news is that this year’s January transfer window was 70 per cent less interesting than any other in history. That’s a statistical fact. The good news is that it wasn’t completely without drama. The men in suits at QPR eventually decided to roll up their trousers and wade in, and returned to work clutching Djibril Cissé and Bobby Zamora – a strike force worthy of most mid-range European clubs. The Life’s A Pitch team huddles around a microscope to discuss these signings and more.

John Cross of the Daily Mirror speaks up first. “It’s all about the strikers at QPR – they’ve been missing goalscorers, and Mark Hughes has clearly taken steps to address that. I think that Cissé is an excellent signing with much to prove, and Bobby Zamora – what a great deal that is.”

Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph seems equally impressed by QPR’s new-look twosome up front. “There are very few players who can hold the ball up like Bobby Zamora. I think it will be a good partnership with Cissé.”

So far, so good. Although Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph finally piles in with a couple of truth-punches to keep everyone from getting completely carried away. “You look at the signings and they’re essentially short-term deals,” he begins. “Mark Hughes is just trying to tighten things up to make sure that QPR stay in the Premier League.”

But will they? Talk then turns to the wreckage at Blackburn, and Saha’s intriguing move to Tottenham.
