Liverpool set to raid Uruguay again?
After Liverpool’s success with Uruguayan recruits this year, Kenny Dalglish could dip into the market for a third time in January for 21-year-old playmaker Gaston Ramirez of Bologna. Here, the Life’s A Pitch panel assesses the latest Uruguayan poised to join Liverpool team-mates Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates in the Premier League.
“He’s a player that most of the top clubs in Europe will be aware of,” says the Independent’s Rory Smith of Liverpool target Ramirez. “He’s young and very, very gifted. But whether he’s ready for the Premier League just yet I’m not sure, and he’d cost a lot of money to be a substitute.”
A fellow South American set to hit the Premier League, but not at Liverpool, is young Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas of Universidad de Chile, who Chelsea are said to want to replace the departing Nicolas Anelka. But the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt insists they won’t pay over the odds. “They are looking for a striker but they don’t want to break the bank for him,” says Jason. “They are looking at maybe £15 to £20million – which is an awful lot of money – but we know this is Chelsea, so they have paid an awful lot more in the past.” Arsenal could provide competition for Vargas’ signature, adds Jason.
The name more strongly linked with the Gunners, however, is that of Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff, who isn’t remotely South American. “I can see something in that,” says Adrian Clarke of the Red, White & Blue podcast, who believes there is a vacancy at Arsenal for an attacking midfielder to play behind Robin van Persie. “Gourcuff is the kind of talent who could thrive in that position,” he says.
Also up for discussion are the many potential transfers Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is lining up, and the future of West Brom misfit Graham Dorrans.
